Petite Thuet’s damn good jam

JamMy first experience with chef Marc Thuet’s jams was the fig variety, which I bought sort of on a whim and ended up devouring as part of fig jam and goat cheese grilled cheese sandwiches. Simple and seriously delicious.

He’s not making fig jam right now, but the more versatile strawberry jam tastes just as good as part of a grilled cheese, plus can spruce up a regular PB&J.

You’re probably thinking: “Almost $8 on jam?!” But trust, when it is one of two key ingredients you want to go for the top of the line. You’re going to be savouring each bite, so quality is key here. Plus, come on, you deserve it.

Avocado

All hail the mighty avocado, which heightens the deliciousness of everything it graces.

Top your sandwich with slices or use it to make a salad, such as tuna (it’s replaced mayo for me).

Here’s a recipe for avocado mayo, which I found via my naturopath’s newsletter. It’s foolproof and you’ve probably got everything you already need in your kitchen.

Ingredients
• 1 ripe avocado
• 1/4 lemon (freshly squeezed)
• 1/4 tsp garlic powder
• 1/4 tsp black pepper
• 1/4 tsp sea salt
• 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

There’s only one step: Mash and mix. Enjoy! And remember, it’s the good fat you’re consuming here.

All Stars rye

To make an amazing sandwich, you must have amazing ingredients, but perhaps none is more important to ‘wich craft than bread. Too much or too little can ruin a sandwich, which is why I wholly endorse All Stars Bakery’s Razowy rye bread.

The Canadian company, based in just outside Toronto, make sure its loaves are only filled with the good stuff, and your naturopath will be happy to hear that this particular bread is low in sugar and yeast free. (That means it’s really really good for you.)

But why do I like it? It’s perfectly dense, and when toasted, maintains a crunchy exterior and soft interior. I guarantee* that you won’t cut the roof of your mouth when eating a slice of this toasted. (* Not a guarantee. But I’m pretty sure it won’t happen.)

I buy my All Stars at a couple Loblaws locations, but they are available at several retailers across Canada, and some in the U.S., too.
